The Provincial Federation of Associations of People with Physical and Organic Disabilities of Seville (COCEFME Seville) together with the European entities Beti and NADE (Lithuania), and CPIP (Romania), developed on May 22 online, the second webinar of the WeUnique program, co-financed by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union, in which a total of 92 people participated.
The aim of the webinar is to improve the inclusion of students with disabilities in the classroom. In this sense, aspects such as the necessary adaptations both in terms of access to the curriculum and methodological were worked through an expository and participatory methodology. It also delved into the barriers it faces and how to address them through a pedagogical approach that knows how to take into account fundamental aspects, such as UDL (Universal Design of Learning) in conjunction with the use of ICT tools (such as AAC), as well as other analogue tools specifically adapted for the occasion.
In addition, other topics were addressed, such as the treatment of bullying through an educational perspective that works on the control of adolescents’ emotions. Likewise, data extracted from recent studies such as ‘Save the children’ were presented, which reflect greater direct verbal bullying among people with disabilities, and indirect bullying in the form of exclusion because they are seen as “weak-helpless elements” and because their reactions are usually introversion and self-isolation (which serves as a signal to teachers and family members that something is going on).
Finally, we were able to analyse examples of “success stories” as well as the advice we have received from different psychologists and educators and lessons plans; “The most effective adaptation strategies are those that have to do with the promotion of tolerance in the classroom and the values of coexistence. Thus, we will work on self-esteem and teamwork strategies.”
