BE A VOLUNTEER! – Volunteering as skill development for people with disabilities

Develop the skills of people with disabilities to help them find employment and actively participate in society.

Project number:

Implementation period: 2024/03/01 - 2026/02/28

General Description

The project aims to develop the skills of people with disabilities (18-30 years old) to help them find employment and actively participate in society. The training of people with disabilities will use non-formal education methods and will focus on experiential learning. The duration of the project is 36 months.

The project starts with the collection of good practices and the exploration of the situation of inclusive volunteering in the local area of the partners. From there, we produce a summary which we translate into the spoken language of the partners involved in the project.

The second period of the project is training for people with disabilities. The training topics will be divided between the partners, so there will be one training in each country. The training should be inclusive and cost-effective, so the local organiser should invite at least 10-15 non-disabled people to participate. It will also be an awareness raising programme for them. Each partner brings 5 people to the training, 3 of which must be people with disabilities. During this period we are jointly developing the training material on inclusive volunteering.

At the end of the training period, the coordinator organises a Blended Mobility Learning meeting in the coordinator's country. The aim of the programme is to bring together people with disabilities participating in the volunteering period. Together we will prepare the volunteering activities and share experiences from previous trainings; it is also a pilot test of the training material (those who are going to participate as volunteers must attend the training) It is "blended" because the training material will be available online.

During the volunteering period, each organisation will work with 10 people with disabilities. They will do 120 hours of volunteer work. We believe that volunteering also has the potential to increase the self-esteem of people with disabilities, because their role is not that of a "receiver", but of a person who "gives" help to others. Each partner commits to involve 10 people with disabilities in volunteering activities. Voluntary activities can be anything that the partner organises for the people involved, on their own or in collaboration with others, in order to enable them to actively participate in society. They can participate in any kind of voluntary activity that develops their skills and can be facilitated by a mentor, for which a specific budget is available.

Activities

  • Holding of 6 organisational meetings, (3 online and 3 face-to-face), where 2 project management persons per partner will participate.
  • At the end of the project, each partner will organise a multiplier event for the dissemination of results. Dissemination will also include the work of the European umbrella association EASPD, sharing training material and best practices at European level.
  • WP1: Project management and coordination: Survey on the general situation of inclusive volunteering (how it is implemented in different countries, obstacles, best practices).
    • OUTPUT: List of best practices
  • WP2: Training for young people with disabilities and organisations working with young people with disabilities.
    • OUTPUT: "Know-how&training material for inclusive volunteering" collectively created by the participants during the training.
  • WP3: Volunteering activities: 120 hours of volunteering activities with the participation of 10 young people with disabilities, accompanied by mentors.
    • OUTPUT: Report on inclusive volunteering activities carried out, on a daily basis.
  • Communication + Dissemination.

This project will be broader, partly because it will include participants over 30 years old, and partly because it will result in an intellectual product. A know-how based on the experiences of the partners, as well as on the cooperation during the project. All partners will have a share of responsibility for the material.

Based on the expertise and experience of the organisation.
