COCEMFE Sevilla celebrates The National Day of the UN Convention on the 3rd of May

The Provincial Federation of Associations of People with Physical and Organic Disabilities of Seville (COCEMFE Seville) celebrates this Wednesday, May 3, the National Day of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Spain. With this purpose we launch a video that is part of the European project RURAL IN LIFE , with the aim of commemorating and recognising the importance of this international normative instrument ratified by Spain fifteen years ago.

The Convention enshrines the rights approach of this group. It considers persons with disabilities as rights-holders, while the State is obliged to guarantee that the exercise of these rights is full and effective.

The video reports on the independent living plan and personal assistance as key tools to ensure compliance with article 19 of the Convention, which recognises the right of persons with disabilities to live independently and to be included in the community, with the freedom to choose and control their lives.

COCEMFE Seville offers advice on the personal assistance and Independent Living Plan through the Independent Living Office (OVI), which aims to provide solutions to issues affecting people with disabilities and their environment, relying on a multidisciplinary team where personal assistance is especially important. The qualitative study carried out in Denmark, Spain, Slovenia, Italy and Turkey, within the framework of the Rural In Life project, describes specific aspects of personal assistance, the barriers faced by people with disabilities and their needs, as well as those of the professionals who work with and care for people with disabilities in rural areas.

Rural In Life aims to develop a training programme for professionals working with and caring for people with disabilities in rural areas, where the right to independent living as stated in the Convention encounters even more barriers and difficulties.
